Vitagene Launches to Bring Transparency to the $32 Billion Supplement Industry

  • December 9, 2015

Illumina Accelerator invests in Vitagene to help advance the science behind personalized supplementation management

Vitagene today announced the launch of its breakthrough health platform that combines bioinformatics and big data analytics with personalized supplementation to transform the traditional vitamin and supplement industry. An industry first, Vitagene uses science and data-driven approaches to empower physicians with the ability to personalize lifestyle recommendations and supplements for patients. In doing so, it eliminates the built-in limitations of an industry driven largely by one-size-fits-all recommendations.

Concurrent with the launch, Illumina Accelerator, the world’s first business accelerator focused solely on creating an innovation ecosystem for the genomics industry, has selected Vitagene as one of four startups to be part of its third funding cycle. The accelerator will provide seed investment, business guidance as well as access to Illumina’s laboratory, sequencing systems and reagents.

"We’re proud to invest in Vitagene in our third funding cycle at Illumina Accelerator," said Amanda Cashin, PhD, co-founder and Head of Illumina Accelerator.

Vitagene was co-founded by Dr. Reza Malek, a Bay Area-based neurointerventional surgeon, and Mehdi Maghsoodnia, a serial entrepreneur and angel investor, who most recently was CEO of BookRenter, a textbook rental company. They have assembled a leading team of scientists, engineers and advisors to help build a supplementation management platform already adopted by dozens of physicians in Silicon Valley.

“One of the biggest challenges for physicians today is providing personalized, high-quality care to patients while keeping up with the growing demand for their time,” said Maghsoodnia, CEO and co-founder of Vitagene. “Vitagene was designed to make analysis, monitoring and management of personalized supplementation programs easy and affordable. The ability to use data to quickly understand and manage outcomes is a key attribute of the future of healthcare.”

In Vitagene’s initial test market of San Jose, more than 70 percent of bariatric surgeons have adopted the platform, bringing an unprecedented level of service to their patients for better results. Similar to other fields of medicine, bariatric surgeons treat their patients with supplement regimens that lack the inclusion of personal health data and solid science. The trend in adoption indicates the company’s ability to gain traction and grow, enabling physicians across many specialties to provide personalized treatments for patients.

Illumina Accelerator is the world’s first business accelerator focused solely on creating an innovation ecosystem for the genomics industry. It provides select startups with seed investment, business guidance, access to Illumina’s sequencing systems and reagents, and fully operational lab space in the San Francisco Bay Area during each six-month funding cycle.
